Mountain bike AE or VTT from Saorge to the Castou Bendola

  • This is a walk for everyone with a nice reward at the end! The "End of the World"... that's the name given by the Saar to the Bendola canyon after the Castou bridge. But shhh... Are you hot? Do you dream of an unspoilt place? This is for you.

  • At the eastern end of Saorge, reach the Romanesque church of the Madonna del Poggio which stands proudly on the same ridge line as the Monastery, just a little below. Let yourself slide on the RD 138until you reach the first big bend, on your right the "Pépinières de la Bendola": leave the tarmac road to go straight on the wide track that joins the hamlet of Castou, due east.
The track winds above the Bendola gorges. You will pass on your right just beside a medieval fortified watchtower...

In its entirety the Bendola is the longest canyon in Europe, rising right on the Italian border.
You will not see the hamlet of Castou, hidden on the left above the track.
    After Castou, the track descends.
You can take a break to daydream, have a snack, swim... either by taking the path which descends on the left in the bend towards the Castou bridge, the Madonina, the Muratone pass and well beyond, the village of Pigna in Italy, or by continuing to the end of the track: there the place known as "plat de Castou" opposite the arrival of the wild Grana valley is offered to you, or a little further downstream the possibility of joining the Castou gorges by aquatic hike... if you are not too chilly!
In any case, you are here in an uncontaminated nature.
