Nestled in a peaceful cirque with a beautiful view of snow-covered Mont Bego, Lac des Grenouilles keeps its waters under ice in winter. You may catch fleeting glimpses of chamois taking up this sheltered territory during the winter months.
From the hamlet of Castérino (1,550 m), follow the road (2.5 km) which climbs gently up the geographical right bank of the valley of the same name to the Valmasque parking lot (1,700 m - b.395), then left onto a forest track which rises through a beautiful melezin. When the latter turns east to dominate the Fontanalbe valley (b.392), reach the edge of Lac des Grenouilles (north) via the ridges among the last old larch trees. Return to the forest track and turn right (south-west) to descend gently into the Fontanalbe valley. Staying on the left bank, you cross a small plateau (large boulders) before plunging down over gentle slopes to the charming Fontanalbe vacheries. A footbridge allows you to cross over to the right bank to gain a little height (1,750 m) and finally find the old military road leading back to the Castérino chalets (b.391).
