Birds of prey are particularly numerous and diverse in the mountains of the Haute-Provence Geopark, this stay will bring you to meet common or rarer species. You will be led to identify them: flight recognition, landscape reading, habitat analysis, hunting behavior, etc.
Day 1: Le Cousson, meet at 9 a.m. with the guide at the village of Entrages. Leaving Digne-les-bains, take the D19, the D20 then turn onto the D120 towards the village of Entrages. This hike with sumptuous landscapes will take you without great effort to the summit of Cousson (4h30 - 12 km - 880m of positive elevation gain). The wide variety of environments crossed ensures beautiful observations. The high-altitude pastures are the hunting grounds of birds of prey such as the Golden Eagle, the Short-toed Eagle, the Griffon Vulture and the Kestrel.
Day 2: La Barre des Dourbes, meet at 9am with the guide at the village of Dourbes. Coming from Digne-les-Bains, follow the D19 towards Dourbes. Once in the village of Dourbes, continue the track towards "Maison Forestière du Serre". Park at the latter. Offering a splendid panorama of the valleys and peaks of the region, this route (4h30 - 9.5 km - 630m of positive elevation gain) crosses different environments. The ascent under forest cover is followed by a crossing of the ridges where you will not miss the hole of Saint-Martin, a curious rock formation. As the vegetation cover reduces as you climb, beautiful viewpoints will be offered to you. By scanning the cliffs in search of the Trichodrome échelette, or the Rock Bunting, you will see Golden Eagles flying over the area.
The best time to observe migratory and nesting birds in this area is from the snowmelt in spring until mid-June. The singing males are demonstrative and easily spotted. However, many species are visible all year round, so discovering these villages and their surroundings in winter and autumn can be very interesting.
