On the Route Napoléon, Sisteron stands at the foot of a majestic citadel. This town, nicknamed the Gateway to Provence, is an eternal passageway between the Alps and the Mediterranean. Visiting Sisteron is a must for anyone interested in heritage!
10 a.m.: board the Citadel's little train for a guided tour of the old town to the gates of the Citadel. Over the course of 20 to 25 minutes, you will begin to discover the history of Sisteron and its narrow streets.
10:30 a.m.: accompanied by your guide, you will explore the Citadel, the town's centrepiece, listed as a Historic Monument and twice awarded for its night-time illuminations. Jean Sarrazin, military engineer under Henri IV, and Sébastien Vauban left their mark on it. Although it suffered damage during the bombing of August 1945, it has been patiently restored over the years by the Association Arts Théâtre et Monuments. In summer, it serves as the setting for the Festival des Nuits de la Citadelle, with theatre and dance performances.
