The best fish markets

From Provence to the Côte d’Azur

From the Côte Bleue to the Côte d’Azur, every morning the fish markets in the Sud tell a story of sea and passion. Here is a selection of the most authentic among them, where freshness, tradition and Mediterranean flavours are always present.

In the Bouches-du-Rhône

The Carro fish market: a real meeting place for fish lovers on the Côte Bleue, Carro is a simple, authentic little harbour where the colours of the pointus boats mingle with those of the fishing boats. The fishing profession is an enduring tradition here and every morning, Carro’s fishermen return with the catch of the day: sea bass, porgy, sea bream, sometimes even tuna, and rockfish for bouillabaisse! The market is open every morning from 8.30 am all year round.

La Criée – The fish market on the Vieux-Port in Marseille: a market with a unique atmosphere and a real Marseillais institution. Depending on the day’s catch, you’ll find whiting, red mullet, scorpionfish, sardines, sea bream, sole, mackerel and even monkfish. La Criée hosts a dozen stands every morning from 8 to 1 and attracts gourmets: The starred restaurant Une Table au Sud, located on the Vieux-Port and next to the market, buys all its fish here.

The fish market in La Ciotat: like Carro and Marseille, you’ll only find extra fresh fish, caught locally by night: sardines, sole, sea bream, sea bass, monkfish, scorpionfish, red mullet… Make a date every morning with the Port Vieux in La Ciotat, a harbour steeped in history where fishing and trade have been carried out since Antiquity!

In the Var

The fish market in Cavalaire-sur-Mer: every day, from 10 am, the fish market sets up its stalls on the harbour of Cavalaire-sur-Mer with a 100% local catch: sea bream, sea bass, small fish for soup, spider crabs, crayfish, to name a few… Ideally located a stone’s throw from the beaches, a visit to the fish market goes well with a morning swim.

La Halle aux Poissons in Saint-Tropez: every morning at 8 am – place aux Herbes, this renovated covered fish market with its marble benches, red tiles and superb ceramic mosaics has kept its authentic old-fashioned charm. The market is open every morning from 8 am, and the starred restaurant Colette has the habit of selecting its rockfish, red mullet, scorpionfish and crayfish here from the Vollan family.

La Halle des Pêcheurs in Saint-Raphaël: a covered market on the Vieux-Port in Saint-Raphaël, between the Fréjus beach on the one side and the Veillat beach on the other. In its great glassed-in covered market hall, it houses nearly 20 metres of stalls, where you can find all sorts of fish, caught locally, of course. And from the dock, as you leave the market, you can even get a glimpse of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire basilica.

In the Alpes-Maritimes

The Saint-François fish market in Nice: in the northern part of Vieux-Nice, under the warm colours of the facades of Place Saint-François, the fishermen set up their stalls from 6 in the morning (except Mondays). This Niçois institution only has a few stalls, but you will only find good, fresh fish here: sea bass, sardines, red mullet and other sea specialities.

The market in La Halle aux Poissons in Cros-de-Cagnes: open every day except Monday, from 8.30 am to 1 pm, the market hides under the stone arches of the port-shelter of Cros. The stalls stand out beautifully against the background of blue tiles. Local, guaranteed fresh fish, and best advice from Corinne Costanzia add a unique touch to the market’s atmosphere.
