A rich and astonishing heritage in every season

Suspended between North and South, between Ubaye and the Hautes-Alpes, Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage is heir to a rich cross-cultural heritage. As you stroll through the village streets, look out for ancient sundials hanging from the dark shale house frontages. The village is also home to a military fortification: the Saint-Dalmas outpost is part of the famous Maginot Line, also referred to as the “Camp des Fourches”. Set at an altitude of 2,300 metres, this abandoned military village still harbours a series of murals painted by its former occupants in their spare time… During your travels, you may well come across a flock of sheep with their shepherd – an ancient (and still very much alive and kicking) traditionin Mercantour whereby sheep are fed on natural vegetation growing along ancient trails. The locals will be delighted to tell you all about it over a plate of Alpes-Maritimes culinary specialities: cod brandade, soupe au pistou, beef stew or succulent green gnocchi locally called merda di can (translated as dog poop!). A must!
Whether you’re a fan of history, fine arts or natural sciences, the Alpes-Maritimes is a fascinating hub of culture and heritage, also offering museums for every taste.
