    If you’re seeking pure air, peace and altitude, or are keen to try your hand at some outdoor mountainsports, look no further! Tucked at the foot of an impressive larch forest, Villard Saint Pancrace is the departure point for a host of hiking and mountain biking trails, leading through the forest to meadows steeped in sunshine. Carved out by the torrents of Guisane, Durance, Clarée, Cerverette and Ayes, the valley is also a renowned fishing hotspot. Set up your rod on the Canadian-style, picture-postcard banks of Lac de l’Orceyrette and wait for the local brown trout, rainbow trout and arctic char to take the bait. This emerald-green lake nestles at the heart of the Bois des Ayes reserve – a little corner of paradise ideal for a picnic in the great outdoors. The site has also inspired many photographers, artists and directors, and several films and series have been shot on location there.

    Tradition has forged the landscapes and everyday lives of the village’s men and women. Coal mines sprang up here in the 19th century and this local industry thrived in particular during WWII.
