Lac de Roue

Bordered by a magnificent larch forest, the lac de Roue is a popular destination for nature lovers. This hiking destination is also a popular place to spend time with family and friends in a superb natural setting, for a picnic or a convivial moment.

A place to relax in a beautiful natural setting

Situated at an altitude of 1850 metres, the lac de Roue is located in the heart of a sumptuous setting, reminiscent of the mythical and majestic Rocky Mountains of Canada. It is one of the only two lakes in the Queyras to be located in a larch forest. Only the Pic de Rochebrune stands out in the sky. In autumn, the larch trees take on a flamboyant hue and offer you an unforgettable spectacle. At sunset, you will enjoy a magical play of light.

The site is landscaped, and you can find a picnic area with tables and benches. Ideal to enjoy the passing of time and to live convivial moments in the company of your loved ones! You can spend several hours or the whole day at the Lac de Roue, just to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Would you like to admire the landscapes of the Queyras? Two viewpoints offer you a beautiful panorama within a 10 to 15 minute walk: you can choose between a view of Fort Queyras and the Sommet Bucher, or a view of Villargaudin

A remarkable biodiversity

Lac de Roue was originally a peat bog, the only one in the Queyras. An adjustment decided in 1972 contributed to a rise of the water level and transformed the site into a lake.

Every year, as soon as spring returns, the site is home to a fauna made up of remarkable insects, including numerous species of butterflies and dragonflies.

Forest animals also frequent the site. The lake is also a watering place for many forest animals. If you come at dawn, you may see deer drinking from the lake.

Hiking and nature sports

The Lac de Roue is located on the GR58, a long-distance hiking trail that leads around the Queyras. Hikers coming down from Clapeyto via Brunissard and the Chalp d’Arvieux, then go back up to the lake through the hamlet of Les Maisons, before descending to Château-Queyras.

The lake can also be a destination for a walk from the village of Arvieux. There are many paths around the lake and you can take many routes through the forest.

Mountain bikers can also ride from spring to autumn on the tracks and paths around the Lac de Roue.

In winter, you can reach the lake by cross-country skiing, with a Nordic itinerary that leaves from La Chalp, passes by the plateau and the Lac de Roue, and by the hamlet of Souliers.

The access to the Lac de Roue

The site is accessible by car, via a road that is suitable for motor vehicles:
