In the 1800s, the ungrateful terroir and rudimentary farming techniques allowed only small farms to produce olive oil, wine, lemons, carobs and a very small quantity of wheat, barley and broad beans. The thousand-year-old olive tree also bears witness to the history of this species of fruit tree in the Oleaceae family.
