The Valensole plateau

December 2021

You’ve already seen its fields of blue lavandin stretching as far as the eye can see, but when Valensole takes on its winter colours, the natural surroundings offer a very different setting. Its prairies, garrigue, maquis, woods and almond trees under the great white coat of winter give the Valensole plateau an infinitely beautiful look!

A setting that is like a painting

The realm of durum wheat and lavandin, the Plateau de Valensole can be admired to the South West of Digne-les-Bains, not far from the Gorges du Verdon. This is one of the most iconic landscapes in Provence, and a great favourite for a walk all year round. The stars of the landscape, the fields of lavandin which differ from lavender in the grassy, camphor smell they give off, their uniform colour and regular tussocks. Here, nature stretches into infinity and wheat, olive trees and the mountains on the horizon form a beautiful backdrop. The limits of the fields outlined by almond trees, the little square woods and the villages sheltering from the mistral in the dales look somewhat like a formal French garden seem to go on forever. In the distance, you can see the mountains of the Prealps, the Dévoluy, the Montagne de Lure, Mont-Ventoux, the Sainte-Victoire range and even the Sainte-Baume.

The Valensole plateau under the snow

In summer, the fields of lavender in bloom have given the Valensole Plateau worldwide fame. In winter it is often ignored even though nature at rest and freshly-fallen snow simply add to its beauty. The mountain peaks in the distance seem to float above the mist and II was literally bowled over by the atmosphere and this moment of beauyt suspended in time. I live in Valensole and I’m a photographer who loves landscapes, so I naturally wanted to immortalise this moment which only takes place once or twice a year. I chose this place because it’s one of the most photographed fields on the plateau due to its orientation. You can reach it by car or on foot, and you can just let yourself be intoxicated by the colours of an endless horizon. Any moment is the right one to come and discover it and each season will offer you a different landscape.

Your senses awakened

Lavender blue and gold in early summer, russet and grey in midwinter, the colours of the Valensole Plateau follow the seasons, adding an explosion of nuances and scents with each one. Take a walk and smell the sweet heady fragrance of the lavender with its soothing and relaxing properties. Photographers will just love the gentle dawns and fiery sunsets, the captured moments which leave unforgettable impressions. A winter walk in the Verdon Natural Regional Park? It’s a good time of year when a unique and very different landscape from the one seen in summer is revealed, especially just after a snowfall. The Valensole Plateau surprises, soothes and delights all year round.
