A setting that is like a painting
The realm of durum wheat and lavandin, the Plateau de Valensole can be admired to the South West of Digne-les-Bains, not far from the Gorges du Verdon. This is one of the most iconic landscapes in Provence, and a great favourite for a walk all year round. The stars of the landscape, the fields of lavandin which differ from lavender in the grassy, camphor smell they give off, their uniform colour and regular tussocks. Here, nature stretches into infinity and wheat, olive trees and the mountains on the horizon form a beautiful backdrop. The limits of the fields outlined by almond trees, the little square woods and the villages sheltering from the mistral in the dales look somewhat like a formal French garden seem to go on forever. In the distance, you can see the mountains of the Prealps, the Dévoluy, the Montagne de Lure, Mont-Ventoux, the Sainte-Victoire range and even the Sainte-Baume.
