Half sand and half pebbles, there’s something for everyone: the eldest child who loves looking for crabs in the rocks and the smallest who loves making sand castles. But Plage du Rouet’s real extra is above all its view of steep cliffs, the bay of Marseille and the Frioul islands.

Plage de la Madrague

Look for fish and shellfish

This is a little protected bit of nature on the edge of a crystal-clear Mediterranean, one of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur’s little secrets. In Hyères, right at the end of the Presqu’île de Giens, the fine sandy La Madrague beach and its pine forest can be reached via the Four à Chaux calanque, opposite the wild, lush green island of La Redonne. In the background, you can see the bay of Carqueiranne and the first hills of the Var. And for keen snorkelers, the sea is not deep here and is marvellous to explore.
