Cassis, a former fishing village at the gates of the Calanques, has become a famous seaside resort on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. If visitors appreciate its picturesque port and shopping streets, they also choose this destination for its heavenly beaches and water sports.

Plage de la Grande Mer

The main beach of Cassis is easily accessible, in the heart of the village and at the foot of the old medieval castle. It appeals to families, who can enjoy supervised swimming from May to September (weekends and public holidays, then 7 days a week from mid-June to mid-September). Plage de la Grande Mer also offers many water sports activities, a first-aid station, showers and restrooms, and access for people with disabilities. Restaurants and straw huts also allow you to refresh your feet in the water.

The Calanques: Port-Miou and Port-Pin

Cassis is the gateway to the Calanques National Park, where numerous spots await you for a swim in clear water. The Calanque de Port-Miouis home to a natural harbor where sailboats and pleasure boats anchor. It is possible to swim there, from the small beach nestling at the bottom of the rocky inlet or from the rocks and pontoons. The presence of many boats should encourage you to be careful.

Port-Pin, which is wilder than Port-Miou, welcomes bathing lovers looking for sumptuous landscapes, calm and sunshine. The small beach at the back is ideal for families. You can also access the water from the rocks.

The other beaches of Cassis

The small Plage du Corton beach, located in Anse Sainte-Magdeleine, is protected by a small natural cove offering a wild setting. Swimming is not supervised. It is easily accessible with a (paying) parking lot in close proximity.

L’Anse de l’Arène beach shelters a small rocky beach at the bottom of a cove bordered by pine trees. Although access to the sea is a little difficult, it offers a wild and spectacular setting. Swimming is not supervised.

The Presqu’île, south-west of Cassis, welcomes swimmers on its rocky beaches and coves. You can easily park at the parking lot (fee charged in high season, free the rest of the year).

Scuba diving in the Mediterranean

The seabed of Cassis and the Calanques Natural National Park is one of the most beautiful diving spots in the Mediterranean Sea. Divers can admire corals, gorgonians, and many species of fish, some of which are endemic. The limpid water allows remarkable plays of light.

Many leisure activity providers invite beginners to try their hand at scuba diving, and experienced divers to participate in more technical sessions.
