The Sainte-Baume Massif

Between Toulon and Marseille, the Sainte-Baume massif culminates at an altitude of more than a thousand meters. The Regional Park is an incredible playground for lovers of nature activities: hiking, cycling, horse riding, paragliding… The fauna and flora are remarkable, with a great variety of animal species: woodpecker, Tengmalm’s owl, wild boar, grey flycatcher, Bonelli’s eagle, Great Horned Owl, hedgehog, European roller, rock mound, red-backed shrike… The historical heritage is just as remarkable. The sanctuary of Sainte-Baume and the basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Saint-Maximin contain the relics of Mary Magdalene, a biblical figure of prime importance. The Basilica of Saint-Maximin, work on which began in the 13th century at the request of Charles II of Anjou, future King of France, is the largest Gothic building in Provence, and houses some of the relics of Mary Magdalene. As for the iceboxes, they bear witness to a time when refrigerators did not exist: ice was produced in winter in the Massif, which was then transported to the major cities of Provence.
