Among the legendary passes, let’s mention the Lautaret pass in the Hautes-Alpes department, the Galibier pass (2645 meters) between Savoie and Hautes-Alpes, the Izoard pass (2361 meters), the Bonette pass, the Lombarde pass (altitude 2350 meters), the Vars pass or the Champs pass (altitude 2089 meters).
The citadel of Sisteron
The town of Sisteron once represented a lock on the Durance valley, and protected Provence from the incursions of neighbouring kingdoms. Vauban built an impregnable citadel in Sisteron, on the site of an old medieval castle.
