The Maures Massif

Reaching nearly 780 meters in altitude, the Maures Massif gets its name from the Moors who came from Spain and inhabited the area during part of the Middle Ages. This imposing mountain range stretches approximately 60 kilometers in length and 30 kilometers in width, forming a natural barrier between the Mediterranean coast and the Var hinterland. Its diverse flora and fauna, along with its magnificent landscapes, are some of the attractions of this natural area.

The Maures Massif is home to remarkable biodiversity. The flora is particularly rich, with typical Mediterranean species such as cork oak, maritime pine, and aromatic plants like rosemary, thyme, and lavender. The forests of the massif are also a refuge for numerous animal species, including wild boars, deer, foxes, and various bird and reptile species.

The landscapes of the Maures Massif are renowned for their wild beauty and diversity. Rocky ridges offering breathtaking panoramas alternate with wooded valleys and dense scrublands. Among the geological curiosities, the massif is famous for its pink sandstone slabs, which give the area a unique and picturesque appearance. These slabs, used in local construction, reflect the geological history of the region and add to the charm of the surrounding villages.

In addition to its natural wealth, the Maures Massif has significant cultural and historical heritage. From prehistoric remains to medieval ruins, the massif is dotted with historical sites that tell the millennial history of the region. Hiking trails allow you to discover these hidden treasures while enjoying the fresh air and stunning scenery.

Gonfaron, a picturesque village, is a tourist stop on your exploration of this remarkable natural region.
