Provence Verte
Bathed by numerous rivers and streams, this natural region is a veritable water tower. Nature activities are very present: cycling, hiking, kayaking on the Argens… This former residence of the Counts of Provence can also be visited for its heritage, with towns such as Saint-Maximim, picturesque villages such as Châteauvert, Carcès or Saint-Zacharie.
The Sainte-Baume Massif
Between Marseille and Toulon, the Sainte-Baume massif reaches more than 1150 meters, at the signal of the Béguines. The massif is an incredible playground for lovers of nature activities: hiking, biking, horseback riding, tree climbingparapente, climbing… The fauna and flora are remarkable, with numerous species of birds such as the Tengmalm’s owl, the grey flycatcher, the Jean-le-blanc circaète, the European rollier, the little scops owl, the blue monticole, the rock monticole, the mad bunting, the proyer bunting… Numerous buildings bear witness to human activity in the Massif. Mary Magdalene, disciple of Christ, is said to have come to find refuge in a cave at altitude, transformed into a church and sanctuary. To the north of the Massif, the town of Saint-Maximin is dominated by a basilica that is remarkable in many ways. As for the iceboxes, they are a vestige of the time when refrigerators did not exist: ice was produced in winter in the Sainte-Baume Massif, which was then delivered by mule to the large towns of Provence.
