The Sainte-Baume massif
Between the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Var, the Sainte-Baume Massif peaks at more than 1000 meters above sea level, at the signal of the Béguines. Hikers and cycling enthusiasts are in love with its landscapes. This natural site is home to exceptional flora and fauna, including a relict forest made up of a beech wood and numerous species of birds. The historical and religious heritage is equally exceptional. The Grotto of Sainte-Baume and the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Saint-Maximin contain the relics of Mary Magdalene, a major biblical figure. At the foot of the massif, the town of Saint-Maximin is dominated by a basilica that is incredible in many ways. At the bend in the road, you may come across largely buried cylindrical constructions. These glaciers used to produce ice for the inhabitants of the Provençal cities.
