Salernes

Tourism and travel guide

Ceramics once played a key role in Salernes’ prosperity. Spanned by the Bresque river, this picturesque village is now a popular tourist destination in Var.

Situated in the upper Var region, Salernes has benefitted from its forests, rivers, and clay-rich lands, becoming a prominent hub for ceramic production in France. The ‘Salernes tiles‘ were once sold worldwide. Terra Rossa House of Ceramics now invites you to explore this industrial saga.

Today, Salernes is a holiday destination for tourists from France, Europe, and beyond. With its shaded streets and squares, fountains, shops, and restaurants, the historic town centre promises a pleasant and lively stroll.

Nature is ever-present in Salernes. Numerous hiking trails beckon you to explore the region’s landscapes: wooded hills, riverside walks along the Bresque, or in Saint Barthélémy Valley Park. You can also go cycling, or try your hand at other outdoor activities such as tree climbing or horseback riding.

You can also make the most of your stay in Salernes by savoring Provencal specialties. Var is renowned for its vineyards, and several wineries welcome you in the vicinity of Salernes. You can also sample regional dishes at village restaurants or stroll through the stalls at the Salernes market, which takes place on Wednesday mornings and Sunday mornings.
