The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard

Located in the Rhône Valley, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard is one of the most famous in France. The red and white wines produced here have an appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC). The popes of Avignon already appreciated the local wines in the Middle Ages, notably Clement VI and Innocent VI.

You can walk through the vineyards, or stop at some of the wineries for tours or tastings. From Châteauneuf-du-Pape you can also easily explore the many vineyards of the Comtat Venaissin.

Monuments and heritage

The village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape experienced prosperity in the 14th century, with the installation of the popes in the Comtat Venaissin.

The castle that still overlooks the village dates from this period, and was built by Pope John XXII to protect the papal states from bandit attacks.

The village was built around a watering place. The Great Fountain is decorated with sculptures and is located near the main entrance.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was originally built in the 11th century. It was extended in the 14th century, the 16th century and the 19th century.

Some remains of the medieval ramparts are still visible.

Museums and monuments near Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The ancient theatre of Orange is located about ten kilometres north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It can be visited, and many shows still take place there, including the famous “Chorégies d’Orange”.

You can also go to Avignon, and discover the many tourist attractions: the Palace of the Popes, the Petit Palais museum, the Saint-Benezet bridge, the Louis Vouland museum, the Musée de l’Œuvre…
