Workshop by David Campbell, a sculptor and stonemason whose studio has been based in the Bibémus quarry for forty years, where he has produced a number of works in the medieval style that will be used to illustrate his talk.
SUBJECTS DISCUSSED (and where possible, demonstrated):
- architectural styles and door and window styles at different eras ,
- drawing and planning different kinds of arches and vaults,
- the use of templates,
- methods of setting up an arch with wooden framework,
- the different crafts involved in building with stone: quarrymen, masons, stone-cutters, sculptors; their traditional tools and techniques,
And other subjects according to your interests and the questions you ask.
These lectures/workshops are given by David Campbell, sculptor and stone-cutter of more than 40 years' experience, who lives in the Bibemus quarry where he has created a number of "ruins" in authentic medieval style which will illustrate, in part, the themes to be discussed .
He has also terminated a master's degree ( maître-ès-lettres) in medieval archaeology at the Université de Provence, art history department.
