It's no coincidence that rue des Savonnières is located in Toulon city center. The first soap factory was founded in Toulon around 1430. Between 1600 and 1650, no fewer than twenty soap factories sprang up along this street. Made from olive oil, Toulon soaps were renowned for their incomparable quality. So intense was the soap trade in Toulon that over 60,000 quintals were produced and exported every year! Every year, some sixty foreign ships disembarked in the port of Toulon to unload their goods, and left loaded with oils and soaps. But in 1669, Marseille, where soap factories had also developed long after Toulon, was granted a commercial privilege: the King of France proclaimed the port of Marseille free, while taxing all goods entering or leaving the port of Toulon. This measure sounded the death knell for Toulon's golden age of soap production. By 1770, Toulon had only 4 soap factories.
