Contemporary art: emerging trends

Over the last few decades, contemporary art in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur has gained recognition thanks particularly to the dynamism of young creation, the powerful upswing of women’s creation and the increasing presence of photography and digital art.

Young creation

Experimenting and exploring the most current artistic practices

There are six higher education art schools teaching fine art in the Région Sud, making it one of the most attractive regions in France. In Nice (Villa Arson), Arles, Aix, Toulon, Avignon or Marseille, students receive quality teaching and also benefit from the presence of many museums, private foundations, art centres and galleries presented in this website and whose activities address the general public, students and knowledgeable professionals. This young creation is inspired by the history of art, by the great artistic currents of the past and also by the upheaval of today’s world and the evolution of our society. The aesthetic proposals it offers spectators can then take on unusual forms and leave the viewer amused, perplexed or surprised. Whatever the case, young creation is a window open onto reality and fantasy.

Women artists

Niki de Saint Phalle, Marcelle Cahn, Nan Goldin…

Since the 1960s, women artists have become increasingly visible in institutions. The recent exhibition of the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain of Nice devoted to the female figures of Pop-Art paid hommage to the creations of great international women creators. So the MAMAC is the place to go to discover the collection of the works of Niki de Saint Phalle, a Pop-Art artist with many facets – painter, sculptor, model and businesswoman. The Espace de l’Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux also houses the radiant and geometric works of the artist Marcelle Cahn in its collections.  Lastly, the Collection Lambert in Avignon has a particularly large fund of photos by the icon Nan Goldin.

Photography and digital arts

Technical progress in recent years the use of mobile phones has encouraged the rapid appearance of digital photography and practice. Every year in Arles, the Rencontres de la Photographie is the focal point for photography enthusiasts. From this summer, the Centre de la Photographie de Mougins is also offering a programme devoted to this art form. More widespread and less visible, the digital dimension of contemporary creation is nonetheless present in many festivals in Provence. The biennial “Chroniques” is one of the highlights of digital creation in the region.
