Description
This church is located just outside the village center of La Bolline (1,000 m), along the main road. It is believed to date from the late 17th or even early 18th century.
In the center of the village of La Bolline Valdeblore, nestled among the houses surrounding the small square,
the Chapel of the White Penitents, also known as the Chapel of the Holy Cross, was built between approximately 1600 and 1635. It is topped by a square Baroque bell tower with an onion dome. The chapel was completely restored between 2002 and 2004.
Above its high altar, a “Deposition from the Cross” stands out majestically.
Modelled after the “Deposition of Christ” attributed to Antoine Bréa (1515), the Nice-based painter Ionnaès Rocca created a monumental work in 1635 for the White Penitents of La Bolline: “Descent from the Cross and Scenes from the Passion”
The portrait on wood of “Mary Magdalene” (1530), attributed to Louis Bréa, follows in the tradition of the Nice Primitives.
In the villages, the Penitents’ communities lived primarily on donations in cash or in the form of bequests of real estate and liturgical objects; they took charge of funerals and came to the aid of widows and orphans.
