The history of this chapel bears witness to the devotion of the villagers through the development of brotherhoods. Several have existed, but that of the White Penitents, a mixed association of brothers and sisters, probably created in the mid-15th century, is the one that has left the greatest mark. Its activities are in keeping with a certain dramatization of the faith, but also play an important role in community cohesion. It was an important part of local life, and everyone, from the most notable to the humblest, received communion in the anonymity of a white robe. The brotherhood probably existed before the chapel was built, in the 16th century. Its original appearance has remained unchanged, but several bequests and restorations over the centuries have added frescoes and other ornaments.
