In Cogolin, a first parish church is attested as early as 1079, but in the absence of archaeological remains, it is not known where this place of worship was located. The current building, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, is dedicated to Saint Sauveur and Saint Etienne. Its construction required the use of basalt, a grey-black honeycombed lava stone extracted from quarries in the Cogolin area.
