Description

Overlooking the harbor of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the 16th-century Citadelle, a listed historic monument, is steeped in history.
In 1543, the war reached the coast, leaving a trail of ruins. To protect the coast, the citadel was built in 1557 by order of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy, to plans by Gian Maria Olgiatti. After becoming a barracks in 1860, it was bought by the commune and transformed into a cultural site in 1981. Today, it houses the town hall, an auditorium, gardens, an open air théâter and the Musée de la Citadelle, offering a place where history and contemporary life meet.
