Ecomusée de la Crau

The Crau Ecomuseum, run by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Conservatory of Natural Areas, reveals the secrets of a little-known region that is unique in France: the Crau Plain. The aim of the Crau Ecomuseum is to showcase the natural and cultural heritage of the Crau: its contrasting landscapes, ranging from arid steppe to lush woodland, its agro-pastoral activities with significant environmental implications, and its extraordinary natural environment, inherited from the African steppes. Designed to be both engaging and educational, the permanent exhibition helps visitors understand the interaction between humans and nature on this plain, which has been grazed by sheep for millennia. The major regional challenges facing the Crau are also addressed: the rearing of ‘Mérinos d’Arles’ sheep, the production of Crau Hay (AOP), and the management of water resources, on which 270,000 people depend. Visitors can also discover the richness of the natural heritage, the rare habitats and protected species that make this area unique in the world, as well as the challenges faced by conservation managers in preserving them. The Crau is also presented through entertaining videos, culminating in an animated film directed by Eric Serre, first assistant director on *Kirikou* and *Azur and Asmar*, which offers a dreamlike interpretation of the formation of the Crau plain based on the myth of Heracles. Other animated films and interactive multimedia displays offer a unique way to discover the issues facing this area. It is also an essential stop on the way to La Crau. To access the area, simply apply for an entry permit (€3), which will allow you to follow the 4.7 km-long Peau de Meau interpretive trail, dotted with 15 information panels.
