Description

Built between 1930 and 1937, Fort Maginot de Rimplas was constructed to bolster the defense of the Tinée River at the bottom of the valley.
Built between 1930 and 1937, this small combined-purpose structure consists of a dam block equipped with two machine-gun embrasures. Supported by the Fort de la Madeleine in Rimplas, it complements the defense of the Tinée River at the valley floor by blocking the road downstream from Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée. Its mission, carried out by a garrison of 36 men, was to prevent Italian armored cars and tanks from advancing down from Isola. Since the Italians were unable to breach the French outposts of the Maginot Line, the fort did not take part in the fighting in June 1940. The association Les Amis de l’Ouvrage Maginot la Frassinéa received the 2022 Vauban Prize for its exceptional exhibition design.
