Description

Located in the heart of the city of Toulon and built at the beginning of the 20th century, this former seat of the sub-prefecture, which became the Hôtel de la Présidence du Conseil général du Var, now houses an art centre.
The building dates back to 1898. It was formerly the subprefecture building, designed by the department’s architect, Jules Roustan. It became the Hôtel des Arts in 1979. Its new, colorful modern façade was designed by artist Alexandre Benjamin Navet in 2020–2021. Previously administered by the Var Departmental Council, this art center was transferred to the TPM Metropolitan Area on January 1, 2020. Since 1999, the building has offered spaces for exploring contemporary art, hosting a succession of exhibitions by nationally and internationally renowned artists. Its influence in the field of visual arts thus makes it a key player in the cultural scene. To continue its commitment to enhancing the region’s appeal, the TPM Metropolitan Area has decided to expand the Art Center’s artistic programming to include design.
