Fire was for a long time the greatest fear of the inhabitants of Saint-Véran, because the houses were certainly made of stone on the lower level but mostly of wood and hay, straw and grain were stored there.
In 1516, a fire caused the entire village to go up in smoke. Afterwards, the village was rebuilt in several districts well separated from each other in order to create a natural firebreak.
In 1874, the village acquired its own fire pump and trained its first firemen! This pump will function until 1967.
Since then, it has been preserved and is visible near the school and is brought out on the occasion of the traditions festival on July 18th.
