The idea of developing the Schappe Park came from Mr Delphin, commander of the Engineers, for the Briançon square. The work began around 1815.
First of all, the two slopes on the banks of the Durance had to be developed into terraces, which had previously been former quarries. An original and ingenious process was used to transport the earth to fill these terraces: it was poured into the large city canal and the Reymondières canal by dozens of soldiers.
