Description
Built at the end of the 15th century, the Grand-Prieuré de l'Ordre de Malte owes its destiny to Jacques Réattu (1760-1833), a painter from Arles and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome. Turned into a museum in 1868, the building houses his entire work and personal collection,
The Réattu Museum has taken up residence in a charming monument - the former home of the Arles painter Jacques Réattu - with a spectacular view of the Rhône. The works of great figures of contemporary art rub shoulders with the creations of emerging artists. Photography has been a central theme here since 1965. At the time, the Réattu Museum was the first photographic collection exhibited in an art museum in France. Today, it is the memory of the famous Rencontres d'Arles, the major festival dedicated to photography that is held every summer in the city.
