Description

Overlooking the harbor of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the 16th-century Citadel—a designated historic monument—offers a setting steeped in history.
In 1543, the war reached the coast and left it in ruins. To protect the coast, the citadel was built in 1557 on the orders of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy, based on plans by Gian Maria Olgiatti. Converted into barracks after 1860, it was purchased by the city and transformed into a cultural center in 1981. Today, it houses City Hall, an auditorium, gardens, an open-air theater, and the Citadel Museum, offering a space where history and contemporary life converge. Listed as a historic monument since 1968
