It's the most emblematic monument in Serre-Ponçon!
Why such a chapel in the middle of the lake? When the Serre-Ponçon dam was built between 1959 and 1961, the chapel was scheduled for demolition, but as it was built at an altitude slightly higher than the theoretical maximum level of the future lake, it was finally saved. Today, the chapel stands alone on an island a few dozen square metres above the level of the lake. A lasting reminder of a sunken past.
