Description

Travellers arriving at the Col de Maure from Digne-les-Bains are suddenly greeted by the sight of the charming Pays de Seyne valley, the Vallée de la Blanche. Nestled against the hill of La Robine lies Seyne, crowned by its Fort Vauban and its ‘Grande Tour’.
Listed as a ‘Village of Character’ and a ‘City of Character’ in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, Seyne-les-Alpes boasts a rich heritage to explore, encompassing architecture, history, nature and religion. The Vauban citadel and its medieval tower, listed as a Historic Monument, overlook Seyne. Originally an ancient Gallic fortress, Seyne was long under the rule of the Counts of Provence and a key battleground during the Wars of Religion. Due to its location, it served as a border town with the Duchy of Savoy and was at the centre of the fighting. Its fortification in the 17th century, under the orders of Louis XIV, transformed its walls into one of the many exceptional citadels created by Vauban. Wandering past the village’s authentic houses, old wash houses and elements of medieval architecture, one can glimpse at the end of the narrow streets the mountains of the Blanche range dominating the valley. It is just a stone’s throw from the Porte de Provence to the Citadel; a stroll through the charming narrow streets punctuated by the eco-museums of the forge, the laundry, the school and the tailor’s. Discover the medieval structures: the three pentagonal bastions, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth overlooking historic gardens, the Chapel of the Penitents and its rare three-sided bell tower, the Chapel of Bellevue and its unique history, the Place d’Armes... A stroll through the streets of the old village will allow you to discover historic gates, half-timbered houses, small squares, wash houses and many other remarkable sights. In the small hamlet of Chardavon, the Maison du Mulet showcases the mule-driving tradition of the Pays de Seyne, tracing the history of this animal and its significance, having originated right here. This village with its medieval character hides incredible treasures to be discovered in many ways. Wherever you look, you’ll be able to marvel at the period architecture and the surrounding countryside. Visiting Seyne is an invitation to learn and recharge your batteries: the historic buildings will satisfy your curiosity, whilst the mountains and forests surrounding the village will tempt you to go for a walk and enjoy our green spaces.
