On Friday 27 and Saturday 28 March, join in the carnival at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence!
Carnival 2026 programme:
- FRIDAY 27 MARCH
In the streets of Saint-Rémy. Meet at Place de la Mairie from 7pm, departing at 8pm, dressed all in white with a hint of red!
The spirits wake up the living and announce Carnival. Dressed and dressed up in white, they wander through the streets and wake people up by serenading them.
- SATURDAY 28 MARCH
4pm: departure of the Grande Chauchade in the streets of Saint-Rémy, in front of the gate of the courtyard of the école de la république. In the presence of the Carnival Association with the Chauche-Vieille, its tirailleurs and its pèles, the traditional music group Batuc'azul, the Marseilles brass band La Farigoule and numerous associations.
6pm: Cremation of the Caramentran - Place de la Mairie.
Opening of the refreshment stall and party to the sound of galoubets, tambourines and other entertainment.
7.30pm: Free musical evening, with soup on offer, pissagne de la Chauche-Vieille - place de la mairie.
The carnival was created more than twenty years ago by the people of Saint-Rémy. They created the character of La Chauche Vieille, the emblematic figure of Carnival in Saint-Rémy, inspired by Mistral's witch and healer, Taven. Chaucha, in Provençal, means ‘to trample’. In the early years, the chauchade (parade) began with the exit of the Chauche and Caramantran (the monster) from the sewers of Saint-Rémy. The Chauche is there to herald the arrival of spring, and Caramantran embodies all the evils suffered during the year, in particular the evils of political power. That's why he must be judged.
