Grand opening: Once again, Renaud Capuçon is teaming up with Joshua Weilerstein, Musical Director of the Orchestre National de Lille for a programme that mixes surefire hits with pieces that may be new to some.
This concert feels like a birthday celebration as the Orchestre National de Lille reaches half a century this year alongside Renaud Capuçon, who happens to be turning fifty himself. The violinist has chosen to perform Barber’s Violin Concerto, a piece that is dear to his heart. While this “concerto filled with tenderness” recorded a few years ago by Capuçon and Daniel Harding, is not necessarily well-known, the audience is sure to find it accessible. To follow, we will hear Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 where the composer proves to be a worthy heir to Beethoven, and Symphony No. 2 by Elsa Barraine, a dramatically stacked piece, written just before the Second World War, subtitled “Voïna” which means “The War” in Russian.
