On the influence of Egypt in Western art.
On the influence of Egypt in Western art.
From the pyramid to the obelisk, from the sphinxes to the refined silhouettes of the tombs, Egyptomania has invaded architecture, sculpture, painting, the decorative arts and, closer to home, the cinema and comic strips... The Egyptian Expedition led by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798 only served to re-launch a phenomenon which, given its permanence, we must try to trace over the centuries. The "Egyptian Style" was already in vogue in Rome, then during the Renaissance, it became very popular in the 18th century, even before the Revolution and became enthusiastic after the Egyptian campaign. Egyptomania is adapted to all periods and all media: painting, literature, cinema, comics, music, pictograms and advertising.
