"Western-camembert", or "western-bouillabaisse", it all depends on your tastes... This is how the first adventure films shot in the Camargue by Joë Hamman and Jean Durand, between 1909 and 1914, were described. However, the very first film shot in the Rhône delta was a version (alas never exploited) of Frédéric Mistral's Mireille, in 1906 by Alice Guy-Blachet and Louis Feuillade. The great poet Mistral had "entrusted the Camargue" to his young félibre friend Folco de Baroncelli, because he himself was already too busy sealing the fate of Provence. The Marquis de Baroncelli and Joë Hamman, who shared the same passion for the Amerindians, met around Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This led to their dream of conquering the plains of the Camargue, which became a reality thanks to their film friends Jean Durand and Jacques de Baroncelli, Folco's brother. Mistral, Baroncelli, Hamman, Cody (Buffalo Bill), Durand... The fabric was woven, the adventure could begin!
