The exhibition
At the end of summer 2020, footprints of a terrestrial reptile called Chirotherium were discovered in Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée, on a rock dating from around 245 million years ago (Lower Triassic). Palaeontological and geological data suggest an arid climate and a deltaic environment, probably on the edge of a lake.
These footprints are contemporary with a period of haphazard regeneration of biodiversity, following the mass extinction at the end of the Permian (around 250 million years ago), the biggest biological crisis known to date.
These miraculously preserved footprints highlight the fragility of life from its origins to the present day.
This exhibition, designed and produced by the scientific team at the Lazaret cave prehistoric site, is on show at the Château-Musée de Tourrette-Levens from 13 April to 5 May 2024.
