Photographs by Jeff Céas.
Portraits of centuries-old stone figures in the heart of abandoned military forts
In Vauban's fortifications, chimneys stand silent watch over deserted barracks. Through these astonishing remains, a multitude of ghostly figures and forms seem to (re)appear.
Jeff Céas has made portraits of them, as if to bring them together in a family album. Using material drawn from fragments of architecture, rubble and stone ashes, he has created abstract photographic paintings that carry with them the memory of the soldiers gathered around the fire and the memory of the place.
