This May 2024 exhibition, entitled Landscapes, features some twenty paintings by American painter O'Neill Cushman, who lives and works in Aix-en-Provence.
These oil-on-canvas landscape paintings were all created en plein air, on the motif, in the Aix countryside. This artist's practice revolves around the fundamental idea that a work of art is parallel to nature, and he expresses himself by exploring the phenomena contained in these natural structures.
In nature, as in his work, he methodically and continuously searches for a poetic truth. This quest guides his rapid, intuitive style, which he calls phenomenological expressionism.
O'Neill Cushman holds an MA in Art from Plymouth University, and teaches drawing, painting, art history and art criticism at the Institut Américain Universitaire, Aix-en-Provence. He studied for several years at the Marchutz School.
