Jean-Marie Besset imagines the genesis of the novel The Princess of Cleves, written in the 17th century by Madame de Lafayette, née Pioche. The play focuses on her unique relationship with the Duke of La Rochefoucauld, with whom they saw each other almost every day for fifteen years to write this masterpiece together. The play approaches the Grand Siècle from the female side, exploring the language issues of the time. Besset drew on the actual collaboration between the two characters to construct his play, but he also let his pen fly to bring his authorial insights to life.
He claims a literary vision of the world to soften what life can be raw and brutal, and to advocate for the humanities, cultural heritage and the French language. Nicolas Vial's rhythmic and visually stunning staging adds an extra dimension to the story, using light and sound effects to reinforce the emotions of the characters and the audience.
For security reasons, access to the theater during the festival is prohibited for children under 6 years.
