This exhibition, which will take place in two stages - in Nice and Baltimore - aims to explore the genesis of this unique mural work and to improve our understanding of it. While the existing literature on the Rosary Chapel is relatively substantial, few scientific studies focus on its Stations of the Cross. This is understandable, since Matisse conceived his chapel as a total work of art, as a whole from which nothing can be understood separately. Two sets of drawings form the core of this exhibition - those from the Musée Matisse in Nice and those from the collection of the Rosary Chapel - to which will be added a large number of sketches as well as photographs documenting the evolution of the project from the first drafts to its final realization.
