The town of Sanary-sur-Mer is proud to honor the memory of one of its children, Sanary native Jules JEAN-LOUIS.
Jules JEAN-LOUIS was the Medical Officer Commanding the French UN Battalion that fought in the Korean War (1950-1953).

On May 8, 1951, he died in Hongcheon, South Korea, while trying to rescue two South Korean soldiers. His sacrifice made him a true hero. A statue in Hongcheon was erected in his honor, bearing the words:
"His heroic sacrifice for Freedom and the humanitarian ideals he embodied in the performance of his mission, particularly in the service of the civilian populations encountered during the battalion's advance, will remain in the memory of the people of this country".
