Opéra Grand Avignon, Opéra Grand Avignon - place de l'Horloge, 84000 Avignon
Concert performed within the scope of the Italian Week in Avignon - La Bella Italia. This concert pays tribute to Rossini, with Mezzo-soprano Marta Pluda and baritone Francesco Auriemma.
Italy, more so than any other country, is the home of opera. In the first half of the 1800s, Rossini's lyrical production was overflowing with vitality. The famous Rossinian crescendo, which transported his characters from melancholy or doubt to hope and even euphoria, is a magnificent demonstration of his talent. His first great opera-bouffe, The Italian Girl in Algiers (1813) is a marvel of clockwork precision. The superb instrumental measues in the overture, the magnificent baritone aria ' Ho un gran peso sulla testa', the vocal extravaganza created by Isabella's grand aria. The same recipes for success are applied to The Barber of Seville (1815) based on the work by Beaumarchais, which holds two celebrated cavatinas: Rosine's 'Una voce poco fa', enhanced by dazzling virtuosity. Partially inspired by Perrault's fairy tale, La Cenerentola (1817) sweeps audiences off their feet with the stunning lively overture and the majestic vocality of the arias. Rossini commands total admiration for his flawless mastery of rhythm on stage.
