A passionate tribute to Franz Schubert, on the occasion of his birthday, through his most beautiful works...
“The world split open, and a fissure pierced the poet’s heart,” a quote addressed to the poet Heinrich Heine that encapsulates Romanticism and, above all, the poetic universe of Franz Schubert. In his short life, Schubert gave a single concert dedicated to his works, in the very year of his death. 1828 was for him the most difficult period and, paradoxically, the most fruitful.

At the heart of our program are three of the final works he composed in the last months of his life—he was only 31 years old: Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major (D. 960), Romances from the Schwanengesang cycle (D. 957) for soprano and piano, and Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (D. 965) for soprano, clarinet, and piano.

This “imaginary idyll,” inspired by a happy love Schubert never experienced, becomes, in these works, the counterpoint to his solitude and the harsh reality at the end of his life. Through his music, he transcended his earthly condition, which still illuminates ours today.

Among those deeply moved by Schubert, Robert Schumann, then in love with Clara, confided in him that he had two dreams: to be with her and to compose like Schubert. Today, this admiration continues with Giora Feidman, for whom Schubert’s music has always been an essential part of her life. She offers us Let’s Be Happy, a work that invites us to be happy here and now.
