The Bravade celebrates the winter solstice (St John the Evangelist), the longest night of the year. St John's Day is very close to Christmas and celebrates the journey into the new year with lots of music and dancing. The event also celebrates the tradition of offerings: on Christmas Day, groups of musicians used to visit local senior figures to perform music and give them a "pompe à l'huile" cake so popular in Provence.
