The origin of Putin's obsessions...
UPOP'Arles, l'université populaire du pays d'Arles, invites you to a lecture on Russia by François Reynaert.
Vladimir Putin's policies are underpinned by a number of key historical factors. These include his obsession with territory, his belief in Russia's messianic role in the world, and his conviction that his country can only be ruled by force. The origins of these obsessions can be understood by turning the whole of Russian history around three major questions: how did this state, whose embryo was the small principality of Kiev, become the largest in the world? On what religious and cultural identity was this empire founded? And why does this country seem destined to go from authoritarian regime to authoritarian regime, without ever achieving democracy?
This lecture will be followed by a convivial aperitif.
François Reynaert, writer and journalist, has written some of the world's greatest historical summaries. Some have become best-sellers, such as Nos ancêtres les Gaulois et autres fadaises, une histoire de France, or la grande Histoire du monde. In 2023, he published La grande Histoire de la Russie, de son empire et de ses ennemis (Flammarion).
