Messiah is Handel's most famous work. Premiered in Dublin in 1742, this oratorio was a resounding success at its premiere: demand for tickets was so great that gentlemen were asked to "forego wearing their swords" and ladies to come "without basket dresses", to make room for more listeners and thus increase the proceeds "destined for charity". Performed again in London, Le Messie soon represented all that music can have of the majestic and sublime.
